Isn't indie to do with the record label the band is attached to? Sorry, but I've always wondered.

Indie is a made up label like alternative. It's a catch all for bands that sounds, well, indie.

I disagree. Indie means that a band is either on a tiny or self owned label. But now people seem to take it as a term which means upbeat 'pop-rock with stupid hair cuts' or something.

Indie isn't some pop-rock band or whatever. There bands that are just small, you find them through searching through at least 5 pages of google and they're just signed by little as NTE said "Self owned labels".
Like J.E.L.L.I., one of the best indie bands out there but not a lot of people know about them which is saddening because they're really good.

Lol.
Indie is quite a depressing genre really. An indie band has the choice of going through their career never getting anywhere (although i guess some people want that) or going mainstream/getting big and not being classed as indie any more. They just can't win.
