what makes something "punk"
any band who does all of the following:
self records
hand makes their merch
does not allow any company to advertise through their music
IS NOT PETA'S BITCH
support true leftist ideals
does not support the mainstream industry
doesn't give a fuck about making money
plays music with pure passion
punk is not so much a genre as it is an actual ethic

Truth. But I wasn't going to put Jawbreaker in emo. Their only really 'emo' album was Bivouac; and I'm not sure about that.

I've never had a good definition of punk before, so its more an ethic than music style?

this all about D.I.Y.

That's the punk culture.
The punk genre is derived from metal which encompasses fast power chords, fast drums and usually anti-political lyrics. The more underground - the more ethics of the subculture are taken into account. However punk is still a genre of music as well as a subculture. Punk music is a large part of the culture, however the mainstreamed genres of punk are nothing more than just the genre.
Yes many punk bands will self record/produce their own music and usually are on a punk made label (if any). That hardly is why they are a punk band. Several other genre 'd bands will do the same. (i.e. Evanescence)
Many non punk bands will also support leftist ideas. (i.e. Serj Tankian)
Very very few purist punk bands will have merch of any kind at all. Mainstream punk bands do. (however their merch isn't as easy to find unless they are older [i.e. the Ramones] ).
Not every punk band gives two ****s about PETA.
Most wont support the mainstream, however the odd one will when asked to be signed by a major label, they are in turn called a sell out.
Playing music with pure passion can be found in any genre and has nothing to do with punk since some punk bands will do it for the message not the music.
Punk IS a genre, with many sub genres now. Many have gone mainstream. Also, the ethics and style of the subculture changes region to region. British punk is different from western American, ect. You dare say "Oi" to a punk in Texas they will kick your *** but if you talk to a punk in Britain which follows the "Oi!" movement they wont.
Also, if you want proof Avril Lavigne is not punk - her music is very general pop rock in style, her songs are about boys, and recently she's done a duet with Lil Mama. She's another pop singer with a rock edge very much like Kelly Clarkson only with a bit of an attitude. Her marriage to Deryk from Sum 41 only gives her fans who claim her to be "punk" some fuel to their very laughable fire.

fuck off mate.
punk didn't come from metal, it came from a response ot the sstate of music when it started, when all the music was just prog-rock, instrumental shit. punk started as a statement to resort back to the days of rock 'n' roll when music was simple, hard and fun.
as for what you're saying about the punk subculture, i'll accept what your saying.
